what's a changeling?

• a changeling is a fairy who has committed a grievous crime, and as such is banished from the realm.
• a changeling takes over the life of a kindly human child to not only punish the fairy but reward the good-hearted and grant them a happy and easy life in the fairy realm.
• changelings are often surly and sickly, because they cannot flourish in the human realm. their biology won't allow it, and the fact that prisoners have their magic bound only exasperates the problem.
• changelings seldom survive their sentence, which is why such punishment is only reserved for the most grievous crimes.
