I enrolled in Beloit College back in March, but I figured I should document the thought processes that led to my decision.
Beloit College
- PROS
- fewer than 1,300 students
- 11:1 student-teacher ratio
- classes taught by actual, qualified professors and not TAs
- more intimate and comfortable learning environment
- students and professors are on a first name basis
- because of the smaller size, I can't skip without being noticed
- a chance to explore and grow without inhibition and influence from people I know (especially my mother)
- freedom and independence
- beautiful campus on which I can walk everywhere without trouble
- visible change in seasons
- CONS
- really far from home, transportation costs
- just plain expensive; I should expect to have a massive amount debt upon graduating
University of Florida
- PROS
- Michael
- practically free
- I wouldn't have to say goodbye to my friends
- a wider variety of majors, great for someone as indecisive as I am
- greater resources
- my mother is bribing me with a "nice sports car"
- recognition; Beloit is a little obscure
- used to the weather, no need to change wardrobe
- CONS
- UF accepted me for Summer B, which means hardly no summer vacation
- I would be around the same old faces from high school
- I fear losing myself here
- Gator fanaticism—ugh
- harder to stand out in a crowd of 35,000
Really, when I look at the situation objectively, I should have chosen the University of Florida. But I don't want to feel as if I missed out on something. This is a one-time opportunity, and I will prove to my mother it is worth it.
