Clay is from the Old English clæg meaning "stiff, sticky earth; clay". It is also an English surname which referred to a person who lived near or worked with clay.
It reminds me of the story of the creation of man. In Genesis 2:7, Adam was formed from the dust of the earth and God breathed the breath of life into him. It gives it some earthiness and humility. I believe this is also the basic creation story for those of Jewish and Muslim faith as well.
