Asa is a Hebrew name, אסא, possibly meaning "healer, physician".
I do suspect that it's related to the Latin word asa though, specifically from asa dulcis meaning "sweet gum". The "sweet gum" this referred to was benzoin, a hard fragrant tree resin used in perfume and incense but also in medicine.
