Bridget is from the old Celtic Brigantī meaning "the exalted one". It is an Anglicization of Brighid.
In Irish Mythology Brigid is the goddess of inspiration, poetry, wisdom, and healing. She was also associated with fire / the hearth, spring, fertility, and protection. Associated with Imbolc, she was so beloved in Ireland in pre-Christian times that instead of trying to eradicate her worship, Christians turned her into a sixth-century saint!
