Ellis is an Anglicization of the Welsh name Elisedd, which is derived from the Welsh elus meaning "kind, benevolent".

As I was driving the other day it came to mind as a girl's name. I'm kinda' digging it. It does remind me of Alice but I have poor associations and dislike the look of it.

It feels a bit more sleek, bookish, clean. She could also be Elli(e) / Elly if she'd like and that's nice.
