Fawn is an English name meaning "young deer" from the Old French faon, feon meaning "young animal". It was used to broadly refer to any young animal in Early Modern English, sometimes noted in King James I's private translation of the Psalms. It was used as the color term for pale yellowish-brown by 1881.
