Fawn is an English name meaning "young deer" from the Old French faon, feon meaning "young animal". It was used to refer to any young animal as recently King James I's private translation of the Psalms. It was used as the color by 1881.

Fawn can also mean "glad, rejoice" from Old English fægen meaning "glad".
