Fern is from the Old English word fearn meaning "fern" which is from the Proto-Germanic *farno- which proposes the notion of "having feathery fronds".
This beautiful plant has a rich history of symbolic use. Many cultures consider them a sign of good luck, protection, and hidden wisdom. In the language of flowers, ferns symbolize magic, fascination, and the secret bonds of love.
For me, Fern will forever be tied to the spunky Fern Arable from E.B. White's Charlotte's Web and her love of nature and animals.
It is a sweet, unassuming name with evident ties to nature. I find it to be very bright and cheerful.
