Griffin is the Latinized version of Gruffudd which is from the Old Welsh name Grifud, the second element of which is deriving from the Old Welsh iudd meaning "lord, prince" but the first element being of uncertain meaning but possibly from cryf meaning "strong".
It is also associated with the griffins of legend. These creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion, and the head and wings of an eagle with talons on the front legs were known for guarding treasures and priceless possessions. By the Middle Ages, griffins were thought to be especially powerful and majestic creatures. The name of these griffins derives from the Greek γρυπός (grypos) meaning "curved" or "hooked". It is also thought to possibly be from the Greek γρύφ (gryph) meaning "hooked nose".
