Helen is from the English form of the Greek Ἑλένη (Helene), possibly meaning "torch" or "corposant". In Greek mythology, Helen was the daughter of Zeus and Leda, whose kidnapping by Paris sparked the Trojan War.

It was more commonly spelled Ellen during the Middle Ages and Helen was not regularly used until after the Renaissance.
