Ida is a Germanic name that may have two different meanings. The first, possibly meaning "industrious", is said to come from the Proto-Germanic *ið-/id- meaning "work, diligence". The second possible meaning, "woman, lady", is said to come from the Proto-Germanic *idiz meaning "woman, lady, wisewoman".
The Normans brought the name to England during the Middle Ages where it slowly fell out of use, practically dying out. It had a revival in the 19th century when Alfred Tennyson used it for the heroine of his poem The Princess in 1847.
