Jean is from the Modern French form of Jehan which is ultimately derived from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan). It means "Yahweh is gracious", from the roots יוֹ (yo) referring to the Hebrew God and חָנַן (chanan) meaning "to be gracious".

Jean was my grandmother's middle name and the name she went by as a child.
