Mab is thought to be derived from either Amabilis meaning "loved" via Mabel or as another, anglicized form of Medb meaning "intoxicating". This name was used by Shakespeare for the queen of the fairies in Romeo and Juliet. It has appeared numerous other times in literature afterwards.

In Welsh, 'mab' is also the word for "child".
