Magdalen is from Magdalene, a title meaning "from Magdala". It was the name given to Mary Magdalene, a historical figure said to be from Magdala, an ancient city on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. The name itself has a vintage charm and regal quality.
I prefer Magdalen be pronounced like "MAWD-lin" but I do also like the "MAG-da-lin" pronunciation.
It has a soft, historical and romantic charm that brings to mind Victorian-era poems and the language of flowers. The connection to Mary Magdalene lends some spirituality to the name and also brings to mind the many paintings that have been created in her honor and the many churches bearing her name.
