Memphis is the Greek form of the Egyptian Mennefer meaning "his beauty" or possibly "enduring beauty".
In Greek mythology, Memphis was a naiad nymph and the daughter of the river-god Neilus. According to the Apollodorus, it's said that "When Epaphos (Epaphus) was the ruler of the Aigyptians (Egyptians), he married Neilos' (the River Nile's) daughter Memphis, and in her honour founded the polis of Memphis, and fathered a daughter Libya."
Here, in the US, it would be hard to separate the name from the city in Tennessee and the Southern "country" associations.
