Mina is a diminutive of Wilhelmina, a feminization of Wilhelm, ultimately derived from the Old High German elements willo meaning "will, desire" and helm meaning "helmet, protection". In Sanskrit, it means "fish" and is an astrology sign corresponding with Pisces. In Persian, it is another name for lapis lazuli, is part of the name of the marguerite daisy (know as Mina's flower), and means "azure", "azure sky", or "blue glass, bead". In Arabic, it can mean "port, harbor". In Pashto, it means "love". Then, it is also a Coptic boy's name from Menas meaning "steadfast".
For the longest time, Mina felt pink and frilly. But now, knowing what I do about the various meanings, it feels stronger. It reminds me of a cold, moody northern sea in the best of ways.
