Mira is from the Latin mirus meaning "wonderful", the Slavic element mirŭ meaning "peace, world", the Sanskrit मीर (mīra) meaning "sea, ocean", and as a diminutive of the Arabic أميرة (Amira) it means "princess". It is also used in Spanish to mean "look", from the verb mirar.

The name Mira was frequently used among the Romans and was often bestowed upon individuals with exceptional beauty or other captivating qualities.

Mira is also a star in the constelation Cetus.
