Petra is from the Greek Πέτρος (Petros) meaning "stone, rock". It was adopted in the late nineteenth century as a feminine version of Peter. This is likely due to the ancient city of Petra being rediscovered in 1812. It was described by the poet John William Burgon as "a rose-red city, half as old as time" and UNESCO has described Petra as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage".

The meaning of the name gives it a strong, 'grounded' aura. As for associations, I think of Petra Collins, a Canadian photographer. Her work / shoots are so interesting!

I am also quite into the song Petra by Weston Estate at the moment.
