Robin is a diminutive of Robert originally from the Old High German Hrodberht meaning "bright with glory" from the combination of the Proto-Germanic hrod- meaning "fame, glory" and the PIE *berht meaning "bright".

Here it is from the common small European songbird, a shortening of Robin Redbreast. Robin's egg is also a greenish-blue, associated with the red breasted thrush, called a robin in North America.
