Rowan is from the Old Irish Rúadán, derived from rúad "red". It is also associated with the rowan tree.

This tree holds great significance in the Celtic Ogham when used for protection against enchantment, magic, and evil spirits. Planting a rowan tree near a home was believed to keep the occupants safe. Carved talismans or even just twigs of this wood are used to ward off negative energy and to help you along the right path to avoid getting lost. The rowan tree is thought to be one of the most magical trees and is an important symbol of protection, good fortune, and magical potency.

In Scotland, rowan trees are also associated with St. Brighid. She was the patroness of the arts, healing, smithing, spinning, and weaving.
