Zelma is an English variant of Selma, a diminutive of the Germanic name Anselma. Anselma combines the elements ans meaning “god” and helm meaning “helmet, protection”. It’s also used as a feminine form of the Yiddish name זלמן (Zelman), a variant of Solomon meaning “peace” from the Hebrew שָׁלוֹם (shalom).
