  • accused: the unsolved murder of elizabeth andes
    • 03/17 | When Elizabeth Andes was found murdered in her Ohio apartment in 1978, police and prosecutors decided within hours it was an open-and-shut case. Two juries disagreed. The Cincinnati Enquirer investigates: Was the right guy charged, or did a killer walk free? ( completed; A really good analysis of a particularly troubling case. Yet another example of ignorance and stubbornness by law enforcement preventing justice from being served. I feel like the former boss is definitely hiding something; I don't for a second believe that the boyfriend had anything to do with it. )
  • homecoming
    • 11/18 | The first scripted series from Gimlet Media, starring Catherine Keener, Oscar Isaac, David Schwimmer, Amy Sedaris, and David Cross. Homecoming centers on a caseworker at an experimental facility, her ambitious supervisor, and a soldier eager to rejoin civilian life — presented in an enigmatic collage of telephone calls, therapy sessions, and overheard conversations. ( completed; I need like, another dozen episodes of this podcast. It was really good and entertaining, but I felt like the ending was so...abrupt? I guess I expected more from the climax. Still, very enjoyable! )
  • alice isn't dead
    • 9/19 | A truck driver searches across America for the wife she had long assumed was dead. In the course of her search, she will encounter not-quite-human serial murderers, towns literally lost in time, and a conspiracy that goes way beyond one missing woman. ( completed; An interesting premise with a great voice cast, but I felt like the ending was...underwhelming compared to the rest of the story. )
  • the message/life after
    • 03/20 | An alien transmission from decades ago becomes an urgent puzzle with life or death consequences. In LifeAfter, Ross, a low level employee at the FBI, spends his days conversing online with his wife Charlie – who died eight months ago. But the technology behind this digital resurrection leads Ross down a dangerous path that threatens his job, his own life, and maybe even the world. ( completed; Excellent story that had me binging the final episodes because I just had to know what happened next. )
  • a killing on the cape
    • 07/20 | More than 10 years after Chris McCowen's conviction for the rape and murder of Christa Worthington, his defense continues its efforts to get him a new trial. And for the first time, we hear directly from Chris to get his side of the story. ( completed; A tragic case that doesn't quite add up. I'm not sure that Chris McCowen did it, but the podcast also didn't do much to offer other theories. )
  • bronzeville
    • 04/21 | Starring Laurence Fishburne, Larenz Tate and Tika Sumpter, and written by Academy Award(r) and BAFTA nominee Josh Olson ("A History of Violence"), BRONZEVILLE will chronicle the lives of players in the lottery games while illuminating the self-sustainability of the community's African American residents. ( season one; Really interesting story with amazing voice work. The first season ended on a major clifhanger, so I'm excited to find out what happens next. )
  • the grift
    • 04/21 | When we hear about confidence games, we think, “never me.” Welcome to The Grift, a show about con artists and the lives they ruin. Best-selling author and New Yorker writer Maria Konnikova takes us to the darker side of human nature and deceit. Ten stories about card sharks, cult leaders, art forgers, impostors, and more. Why do we fall for them time and time again? ( completed; Interesting stories but something about the host's delivery was off-putting. Tragedy strikes and they still talk like they are storytellers rather than talking about real-world events. )
