  • background:
    • sailor/pirate: you sailed on a seagoing vessel for years. in that time, you faced down mighty storms, monsters of the deep, and those who wanted to sink your craft to the bottomless depths. your first love is the distant line of the horizon, but the time has come to try your hand at something new.
    • cosette was abandoned by her mother when she was 2 and got picked up by a discovery ship off the coast of her hometown. she doesn’t know anything about her original family or home. The captain, alistair, felt pity for her because she reminded him of his late daughter, whom he had to leave behind for work and eventually lost to illness, never getting to say goodbye. worried about losing another daughter, he kept her at a distance as he raised her. it’s something neither would admit in words, but they held a mutual care for the other. she was originally a navigator on the holdernesse, a medium ship that was not very well-known until captain alistair made agreements with neighboring pirates. the ship is still sailing now and is gaining notoriety for its increasingly violent looting campaigns. the captain that had raised her made a deal with some seedy pirates for profit. Young and having little choice, she helped. from then on, she was overlooked, treated as nothing but a child, and was never compensated for her part in the lootings. cosette feels like the pirates are indebted to her but at the same time, she feels guilty and doesn’t want any association with them because they’re a reminder of her past. these lootings involved brutal murders when people didn’t comply. it didn’t start like that of course, but eventually things escalated. cosette knew she had overstayed her welcome on the ship, and never looked at Alistair the same way again. she had little money to her name, but plenty of skills to survive on her own. she had been searching for about a year, moving from town to town looking for some kind of profit, any kind of profit. although she was barely scraping by, it was much better than taking orders from someone else. Much less, orders to kill. on her journeys, she heard about a frontier town called phandalin and rumors that there were gold mines nearby. could this be her big ticket? ger chance to stop living like a rat, surviving on one piece of bread for a 10-day? the story begins when she has just arrived.
