Art vs. the artist 2022

DECEMBER

  • I finished off this year with some sketches of my favorite singer, Fiona Apple!
  • Along with some store-bought items, I crocheted my best friend Emily a beanie, my aunt a doily, and my dad a soap on the rope and a glasses case—everyone loved their gifts! Didn't get any pictures, oops.
  • This is a redraw of a piece by my good friend Lucy! The lyrics are from “Sarah” by Alex G.

NOVEMBER

  • When I first started this sketch, it was because I was bored in art class and didn’t want to do my assignments. When it came to the hat, I got a little lazy and decided I didn’t want to sketch it. So, I took the route that is arguably harder—turning it multimedia! I absolutely love how it turned out! It resides safely in my junk journal/scrapbook/sketchbook. (P.S.: I may post a full flip though when It’s finished. A few pages are already featured on this list because I love them so much.)

OCTOBER

  • A beanie I crocheted for my Halloween costume! I went as Spinelli… I had a ton of fun!
  • A painting I did for Art Techniques. The assignment was Cubism.
  • This bag was made out on old jean skirt I no longer fit in. I originally wanted to make a Jean bag out of a pair of jeans, but I came across this skirt when going through my dresser. It was too cute to give away! This skbag (skirt + bag) is, hands down, the best thing I’ve ever sewn ever… I’m obsessed!
  • Jenna, behold the answer to life’s biggest question: “What is a ‘weed bag’?”

SEPTEMBER

  • A sketch of my friend Emily at homecoming.
  • A series of pen sketches I did of my friend Jenna for art class.
  • A silly little sketch of a silly little guy!
  • Three-pass sketches I did for Art Techniques that are actually just normal sketches.
  • For my second linocut assignment I decided to do a multi-color reduction. This was absolute hell to work on. I accidentally carved out the part I wanted to make green (which is why part of the print is done in watercolor), I had a limited selection of ink colors, and the print itself BROKE IN HALF during the printing of the first color. Was it worth the result? Not sure. Nonetheless, I am fond of the few good prints that resulted from this fiasco.
  • In my Art Techniques class we made linocuts! This single-color reduction is titled Self Portrait in Space. Jenna and I both made a print relating to the theme of space. I'm really proud of it and think it's super cute.
  • I remember seeing a challenge a while back where people would draw something with a black-and-white color filter on; that's what I did with this drawing. Even though this isn't my favorite drawing I've done, it was really fun to blend out the hair, and I enjoyed working on it.
  • Recently I’ve been having trouble getting inspired to draw, and I think I figured out how to fix that: just keep scribbling until you find something that sticks. I can’t even begin to express how much I love this drawing. I really enjoyed working on this and still feel super inspired! The lyrics are from "Bodys" by Car Seat Headrest.
I made this Pinterest board for inspo.
  • My friend's birthday was this weekend, and I made her three little top hats for her rats. She loved them! I made up the pattern on the fly :)
  • Finally, after many months, I have finished my cardigan. This took me way longer than it should have and it turned out HUGE. I guess that's what I get for trying to adjust the pattern! It's all good though; It's super comfortable and feels like a blanket. I might not wear it to school, but I will definitely wear it at home. Overall, I'm happy with how it turned out and am more than ecstatic to (finally) be done with my first actual crochet clothing piece!

AUGUST

  • For my friend's birthday I made her the little blue heart which led me down the dark path of making a crap ton of crochet hearts. The small purple one is mine and the fluffy purple and pink one is for my cousin. I also made two other fluffy hearts for said cousin's brothers, but they weren't done when I took the picture. The hearts are fun and easy to make! So much fun that I even plan on making more! The star? Complete opposite. Every minute was hell and made me want to blow my brains out. Very happy with the result though :)

JULY

  • When I used to frequent Joann Fabrics with my dad he would always point out the Schitt's Creek yarn when we passed it. I don't think he was ever that big of a fan of that show, but I know he thinks the name is funny, so I decided to make him a hat out of it! Working with this yarn was less than satisfactory because it felt... loose? Plus I realized I messed up halfway through and had to restart. Anyways, I'm happy with how it turned out, and so is Dad!
  • I think doilies are kind of stupid, but I love them. They're super fun to make and are cute decorations! When I initially found the thin yarn these are made of in the basement I had no idea what to do with it. Super glad I found it though; I am head over heels for the white doily I made! This is the pattern for the pink doily.
  • There's really nothing special about this hat, but I love it so so so so so so so much! It's so silly! When I saw this yarn at the store, I just KNEW I needed to make it into a cat hat. (PS: I’ve crocheted a few other hats this year and I crocheted my dad a pale green tie for Father's Day last month using this pattern!)
The hat is a little stretched from wearing it.
Me painting pottery in my cat hat many moons later. You can't really see it, but I added a little cat button on the right side (left in this picture because it's inverted) and it makes the hat ten times cuter! This hat is still my absolute favorite!
  • I have had literally zero inspiration at all this summer so when I finally got a good idea, I was super excited. This excitement and sudden inspiration led to me staying up way too late just to finish this drawing. I don't regret it though because I love this drawing so much! (PS: I have also made like 20 bracelets this month, I just don't feel like taking a picture of all of them. Mostly because I gave the majority of them to other people)

JUNE

  • From the 19th to the 25th I was at camp (I had a blast) and one of the most popular activities at camp is making friendship bracelets. Obviously, I already knew how to make bracelets because I've been camping for 6 years, but I only knew the basic patterns. This year I used magic to figure out how to switch directions and make a diamond shaped thing! Although it looks simple, I can assure you it was not easy and took me a pretty long time. I'm genuinely very shocked that I figured out how to do this. PS: summer camp is super fun and I highly recommend you try it out if you haven't! PPS: I also made a cute necklace that I can’t take off while at camp but I don’t want to take a picture of it… Maybe you can find it in other pictures!
  • This piece is based on a dream I had when I was 7. I completely forgot about it until I was listening to "Anything We Want" by Fiona Apple one day. Normally I don't draw backgrounds so this was a little challenging, but playing around with the warped perspective was fun. I'm really proud of this and it's definitely my favorite drawings I've made!

MAY

  • I took a photography class this year and the only things I remember are parallax error and the rule of thirds. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, I just didn't pay attention. Nonetheless, I passed with an A+ and got a pretty cool portfolio (that you don't get to see inside of) to show for it.
  • For my art final I was supposed to draw a still life, but as you can see, I did not do that. (Don't worry, I asked if I could do a portrait instead.) I decided to draw Patrick Bateman, but when I got to the head I made the artistic choice (who am I kidding, I was just lazy) not to draw his head. That is why I call this piece "The Headless Bateman."
  • This is just a silly little painting I did of my friend Maddie. It’s nothing special but I like it enough to share with you guys.
  • Man, look at that... feast your eyes upon VOLUME TWO OF MUSICALLY INSPIRED! This volume comprises mainly Fiona Apple songs and is primarily done in watercolor. I decided to have more fun with the cover and do a couple of abstract-esque pieces! It would be super cool to get a better printer and distribute my zine to people other than my close friends.

APRIL

  • OH YEAH, LOOK AT THAT! It’s a zine, baby! I’ve always wanted to make one, and I finally did! Each page is inspired by a different song (hence the title), and all of them are listed in order on the back. I don’t know exactly how I came up with the idea, but I’m really proud of the result. I expect to make more in the future. (PS: there is a total of seven copies, including the original.)

MARCH

  • I started this cuff about a year ago but never had the right beads to finish it. But I’m thrilled I finally got them because I love this cuff! If you can’t tell, it’s a watermelon! I saw a similar one on Pinterest around the time I started making it, but I don’t have the picture anymore, sorry!
  • After what feels like forever, I have decided to start making kandi again! I forgot how fun it is! When I began making this cuff, I had no idea what the theme was or what I wanted it to look like; all I knew was I wanted it to be red and black. When I was about halfway done with the base, I was like, “Wow, these colors remind me of Harley Quinn,” so now it’s my Harley Quinn cuff! It has three layers that rotate :)
  • After playing a speed draw game on Roblox, I found out that I love to draw bunnies! These are my two favorite pieces that have come from this discovery.
  • I FINALLY DREW SOMETHING THAT’S NOT REALISTIC!! (This is your cue to clap.) Thank you, thank you, oh you’re too sweet! Please, don’t make me blush! Anywho, I’m quite proud of this. There are some things I don’t exactly love about it, but I won’t point them out because I don’t want anyone else to notice, LOL!

FEBRUARY

  • Another bag! It’s made of thirteen granny squares. I used this as a reference up until the handles, then I watched this.
  • Funky Fish! This is my first multicolor linocut; it's dedicated to my pet fish, Gerald. There are twenty-one prints total, but two are missing in the photo because my friend has one and the other is hanging up.
A higher quality image can be found here.
  • Self-portrait! I usually draw digitally and use the grid method; this time, I just looked at a picture and… drew it. Very proud of it!! The drawing itself was done in a sketchbook. I cut it out and glued it into my junk journal when I was done. There are lyrics to my favorite song of all time on the left page: “Holland, 1945” by Neutral Milk Hotel. The lyrics continue on the next page.

  • Market bag! It took a lot longer than expected because I accidentally messed up making the netting part… The bag itself ended up being a little bigger than excepted because I used a bigger hook but it’s all good. I used this pattern :)
