- Oh Sally, my dear, It's you I'd be kissing. She smiled and replied, "You don't know what you're missing." Oh Sally, my dear, I wish I could wed you. Oh Sally my dear, I wish I could bed you. She smiled and replied, "Then you'd say I misled you." If all the young men were hares on the mountain, how many young girls would take guns and go hunting? If all the young men were fish in the water, how many young girls would undress and dive after? If the young men could sing like blackbirds and thrushes, how many young girls would go beating the bushes? But the young men are given to frisking and fooling. So, I'll leave them alone and attend to my schooling.

- You may call it in this evening, but you've only lost the night. Present all your pretty feelings; may they comfort you tonight. And I'm climbing over something and I'm running through these walls. I don't even know if I believe. I don't even know if I believe. I don't even know if I believe. Everything you're trying to say to me. I had the strangest feeling your world's not all it seem. So tired of misconceiving what else this could've been. I don't even know if I believe. I don't even know if I believe. I don't even know if I believe. Everything you're trying to say to me. So open up my eyes; Tell me I'm alive. This is never gonna go our way, if I'm gonna have to guess what's on your mind. Say something, say something-something like you love me. Less you want to move away from the noise of this place. Well I don't even know if I believe. I don't e...

- They heard him pacing slowly along the walks at a very advanced hour of the night. He was there alone, communing with himself, peaceful, adoring, comparing the serenity of his heart with the serenity of the ether, moved amid the darkness by the visible splendor of the constellations and the invisible splendor of God, opening his heart to the thoughts which fall from the Unknown. At such moments, while he offered his heart at the hour when nocturnal flowers offer their perfume, illuminated like a lamp amid the starry night, as he poured himself out in ecstasy in the midst of the universal radiance of creation, he could not have told himself, probably, what was passing in his spirit; he felt something take its flight from him, and something descend into him. Mysterious exchange of the abysses of the soul with the abysses of the universe! He thought of...

And then all the people shouted loudly, Praise the Lord!...they cried when they saw the foundation of this temple. Most of the other people were shouting with joy. The people made so much noise it could be heard from far away, and no one could tell the difference between the joyful shouting and the sad crying. - Love will come, and love will go, as the seas roll on forever. Lost love has the everlasting flow of a never-ending river. It's not an easy reckoning, but sometimes I have the notion that womankind, and her heart and mind, sails on a restless ocean. A tall ship came from windward away, on a grey atlantic morning; She showed no lights or colors, in the hour before the dawning. On a full rig run to the rising sun, she reached our starboard quarter and I'll ne'er forget the name she bore, she was called The Neptune's Daughter. Her sails were white as ivory, and her rigging sang like harp-strings. Her spars were black as ebony, and her wheel spun free of lashings. Her cloak of grey was the spindrift spray, as she split the waves asunder. I can see her now as she crossed our bow, while we gazed in silent wonder. Her course was set by destiny, and no helm...

A love song I've dragged myself of the couch into my little piano corner framed with moving boxes to work on an arrangement, to practice singing. The first time I performed it, the feedback I got from Darlene and Bill was: Too slow. You should hear Peter do it now. I told Mike that I was just about ready to give up, just like I've been ready to give up all this last year. Frustrated every time I try to produce a sound. So tonight at the church in Twilingate, I was putting all my energy into making sure the sound was good, thank God for Mike, and making sure that the rhythm section was something we acknowledged. - Every stoplight I didn't make. Every chance I did or I didn't take. All the nights I went too far. All the girls that broke my heart. All the doors that I had to close. All the things I knew but I didn't know. Thank God for all I missed, Cause it led me here to this.
- It's always been about me, myself, and I thought relationships were nothing but a waste of time. I never wanted to be anybody's other half. I was happy saying I had love that wouldn't last. That was the only way I knew 'til I met you.
- Careful you don't catch her, Give her right of way. For she will look upon you and steal your soul away. For the white hare is calling, She's dancing in the night. She'll be out 'til the morning with her eyes burning bright.

- Sometimes I think about the ones that we’ve replaced; all the millions underneath the burnt and waste; and I get sad because, of course, we’ll be the same-all of history collapsing in its wake. Maybe it’s enough that I have laid here. Maybe it’s enough that I have known inside my head, and maybe it’s enough to know that we were here together and that we are the ones, we are the ones, we are the ones for now. I heard that someday when they look up at the night they’ll see nothing but a black and starless sky and they’ll tell stories of some old and callow time, claiming spectacles of brilliant burning lights. So maybe this is what it takes to realize I am grateful just that I have been alive and I’ll be happy if I look back on my life, been a sister, been a mother, been a wife. ~Grannis

- "The most delicious piece of knowledge for me is that I am a child of God. That is so mind-boggling, that this "it" created everything, and I am a child of "it." It means I am connected to every thing and every body. That's all delicious and wonderful--until I'm forced to realize that the bigot, the brute, the batterer is also a child of "it". Now, he may not know it, but I'm obliged to know that he is. I have to. That is my contract. What fascinates me is the varying ways we approach God. And shape God and paint God, make a statue of God. It amazes me. Once I went to Texas to a conference called "Facing Evil." At one point, some fellow from Texas got up and said, "I really have seen evil, I have felt its force. I went to Germany and I went into the concentration camps." I stood and said, "Do you mean to tell me that we've come from all over the wor...

- The Dutchman's not the kind of man to keep his thumb jammed in the dam that holds his dreams in, but that's a secret only Margaret knows. When Amsterdam is golden in the morning Margaret brings him breakfast; She believes him. He thinks the tulips bloom beneath the snow. He's mad as he can be but Margaret only sees that sometimes. Sometimes she sees her unborn children in his eyes. Let us go to the banks of the ocean, where the walls rise above the Zuider Zee. Long ago I used to be a young man and dear Margaret remembers that for me. The Dutchman still wears wooden shoes, his cap and coat are patched with love that Margaret sewed in. Sometimes he thinks he's still in Rotterdam. He watches tugboats down canals and calls out to them when he thinks he knows the captain 'til Margaret comes to take him home again. Through unforgiving streets that trip hi...

- In this descent and reascent everyone will recognize a familiar pattern.: a thing written all over the world. It is the pattern of all vegetable life. It must belittle itself into something hard, small, and deathlike, it must fall into the ground: thence the new life reascends...The doctrine of the Incarnation, if accepted puts this principle even more emphatically at the centre. The pattern is there in Nature because it was first there in God. All the instances of it which I have mentioned turn out to be but transpositions of the Divine theme into a minor key. I am not now referring simply to the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Christ. The total pattern, of which they are only the turning part, is the real Death and Rebirth: for certainly no seed ever fell from so fair a tree into so dark and cold a soil as would furnish more than a faint analogy ...

- I am sipping my cup of chai tea. The dishes are done, laundry is on the go, and an empty box is waiting for me to fill it. I am really struggling. This year is the struggle year. I have attended all the programs I ever wanted to, had the experiences I wanted, met the partner and companion I wanted, and still I feel lost. I rambled to my mom about the things I need to do as a musician with free time; how empty days, solitude and independence are a blessing. Then the skies turn grey and the rain drips on the window pane and its the only sound I can hear. And it is often blocked out by voices in my mind telling me I can't do it, I don't have the talent, the opportunities, the connections, the unique and creative energy needed. So I'm going to watch American Dad, pack boxes and pray.

- Remember when our songs were just like prayer? Like gospel hymns that you called in the air. Come down, come down sweet reverence Unto my simple house and ring... and ring. Ring like silver, ring like goldm Ring out those ghosts on the Ohio, Ring like clear day wedding bells. Were we the belly of the beast, or the sword that fell? We'll never tell. Come to me, clear and cold On some sea watch the world spinning waves Like that machine Now I've been crazy, couldn't you tell? I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell. Now I'm covered up in straw, belly up on the table. Well I drank and sang, and I passed in the stable. That tall grass grows high and brown, Well I dragged you straight in the muddy ground and you sent me back to where I roam, Well I cursed and I cried, but now I know. And I ran back to that hollow again, The moon was just a sl...

- One means somebody's lonely. Company means there are two. Three means a crowd, and it's about to get loud and four means more than a few. Five means to take a quick little break and get back to work when you're through. I just want to mean something to you. Lightning means there'll be thunder. Sun means the sky'll be blue when the leaves are falling, it means that autumn is calling and the summer days are through. Snowflakes mean that it's winter. Yeah, the birds'll tell you it's true. I just want to mean something to you. Maybe what I mean to say is that I think about you in the most romantic of ways and I'm hoping you'll be open to discussing us and nothing in between. Maybe what I mean is that I love you more than any other I've seen. If you couldn't tell well I hope you're quite keen on it. Like a rhyme loves a sonnet. Like a movie loves a scree...

- Well I take your hand inside my hand and hold it tight tonight. We made mistakes and we've known troubles, but we'll leave them all behind. So Mary Gene will you be my queen? And bless our friends who stand by us and will share this joy with us first. Let them stay rich in their kindness because we know what it is worth. Though Mary Gene, will you be my queen? 'Cos oh my girl I love everything you do. You and me make a pretty fine pair too, and I would do about anything for you. So let's dance till this whole night is through. What would they say, what would our parents say if they heard those whispered words. That you are more, you are more than the whole world I once knew.

- It is a grey November day but the heater has finally warmed up the kitchen. Looking at the sparkly snowflake decorations I hung in the window a few days earlier, I smile and tell myself Christmas is almost here. I'm making a homemade apple pie; our huge potter bowl, one dozen apples lined up in two rows, a bottle of ameretto, an assortment of spices and a large bag of flour spread across my table. I put away the leaves and pumpkins and put out red and white candles with a pearl necklace wrapped around the display. Nikki put out a red lace table cloth and table runner from the dollar store today and I'm excited to have a christmasy home. I start thinking about going home for the holidays and whether I should bring more of my things, maybe my records, back to Newfoundland. Away from mom and dad's storage and into my home. The more I say it, the more i...

- I don't know if you're ready to go where I'm willing to take you girl. I will feel every inch of your skin and you know I can rock your world. I will be the calm in the storm you're looking for, I'll be the shipwreck that takes you down. I don't mind if you lie in my bed we can stay here forever now. Turn off the lights, take off your clothes, turn on the stereo. Give up the fight, I'm in control, Why don't you let it go? I want to know you inside out. I'll spend my life trying to figure out. Just close your eyes and shut your mouth and let me kiss you inside out. I don't care if you steal all my air, we can breath in together as one. It's all right if you're here every night waking up with you in the sun. We start with an hour and we find we waste the day kicking back with the love we found. I don't mind if you lie in my bed. We can stay here forev...

- Thy hand Belinda, darkness shades me, on thy bosom let me rest. More I would but death invades me, death is now a welcome guest. When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create no trouble, no trouble in thy breast. When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create no trouble, no trouble in thy breast. Remember me, remember me, but, ah, forget my fate.
- Moon, high and deep in the sky, your light sees far. You travel around the wide world and see into people's homes. Moon, stand still a while and tell me where is my dear. Tell him, silvery moon, that I am embracing him. For at least momentarily let him recall of dreaming of me. Illuminate him far away and tell him, tell him who is waiting for him! If his human soul is in fact dreaming of me, may the memory awaken him! Moonlight, don't disappear, don't disappear.

- The discrpancy between a movement of atoms in an astronomer's cortex and his understanding that there must be a still unobserved planet beyond Uranus, is already so immense that the Incarnation of God Himself is, in one sense, scarcely more startling. We cannot conceive how the Divine Spirit dwelled within the created and human spirit of Jesus: but neither can we conceive how His human spirit, or that of any man, dwells within his natural organism. What we can understand, if the Christian doctrine is true, is that our own composite existence is not the sheer anomaly it might seem to be, but a faint image of the Divine Incarnation itself--the same theme in a very minor key. We can understand that if God so descends into a human spirit, and human spirit so descends into Nature, and out thoughts into our senses and passions, and if adult minds (but onl...

We are miracles; every breath is magic. Belief over misery, I've seen the enemy, and I won't go back- back to how it was. I got my heart set on what happens next. - Life was too short to be with someone who wasn't quite right. Someone who made you think more than they made you feel.
- The feelings that hurt most, the emotions that sting most, are those that are absurd; the longing for impossible things, precisely because they are impossible; nostalgia for what never was; the desire for what could have been; regret over not being someone else; dissatisfaction with the world’s existence. All these half-tones of the soul’s consciousness create in us a painful landscape, an eternal sunset of what we are.
