SHORT ESSAY

  • My goals
    • My long-term goal is to become both a working artist and an art teacher, focusing on teaching ceramics to minority and low-income students in a non-classroom setting. Art is a necessity, not a luxury. The visual arts have proven to be crucial in every progressive social movement. It's important to me to ensure that marginalized young people realize they have within their reach the tools they need to make their voices heard and to claim a place for themselves in society. I want to hone my own skills as much as possible so that I can contribute to the lives of young people who may otherwise lack substantial access to the arts, either as creators or as audience.
  • Coffee essay
    • As a future educator, it's crucial for me to make the most of my education now. From my early childhood, my parents and grandparents have encouraged a love of learning in me; I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by adults who prized quality education for its two-fold reward: the potential to improve one's quality of life, with both outward and inward expressions. I would love to be that encouraging adult for the next young people. My long-term goal is to teach art to minority and low-income students in a nontraditional classroom setting to better prepare them for academic success, to provide a healthy source of self-esteem and means of expression, and to empower them to confidently engage in the public sphere.
    • I've spent three summers so far doing volunteer construction work in the beautiful nation of Nicaragua; it was during a visit to a coffee field and the employees' homes with gifts of food staples that I realized the magnitude of the socioeconomic gap that often separates people from different backgrounds. In truth, I'm more interested in the production of coffee, and in those who work hard to harvest it, than I am in the fruit of their crop. Families who work Central American coffee fields can rarely afford to spare both their children's field labor and the money to send their children to school, ensuring that they too have a long hard future in the fields. Education makes all the difference--but not just for me; for everyone with dreams. Everyone has potential. And despite the belt-tightening trend that leads government officials and school boards to cut funding for music and the visual arts, art remains a very vital component of a well-rounded education. Arts education improves students' cognitive abilities and imparts valuable skills necessary for success in other areas of study. Instruction in ceramics in particular has been shown to improve children's motor skills, increase problem-solving abilities, and create a better understanding of physics and chemistry.
    • It is imperative that I push my own technical skills to the limits so I can better share those skills with others, and there's a wealth of opportunities to invest in another young person's future. As an undergraduate, I will be able to mentor students in a local high school; later, I plan to teach during the school year and spend the remaining months in Central America, working to advance the quality of life and the chance for an education for Nicaraguan children trapped in a cycle of poverty. If chosen, my award money will be applied to the cost of textbooks and art supplies for ceramics and other studio classes in a cutting-edge fine arts program, preparing me to make a meaningful contribution to art, to the lives of marginalized young people here in the States, and to the world as a whole.
