I need some inspiration for National Novel Writing Month. I thought maybe a list like this would help me write.
- character-based fiction
- characters I love, hate, and/or fear
- fascinating personalities and backstories
- complicated relationships
- suspense, tension, excitement
- roller-coaster stories
- when "this can't get any worse" does
- flawed characters
- asexual women
- unexpected surprises - present and past
- strong and intense emotions
- characters who clash with each other
- differences made clear
- conflict! a lot of conflict!
- ...and even more conflict
All of these are things I really want to write. Now all I need to do is write them.

This is a List Your Self list, which is more like things I would miss if I happened to die. I have a lot of reasons to love my life.
- Food. Food is amazing and delicious. I take such immense pleasure in eating, spending time with people over food, and cooking. I enjoy trying new things when it comes to food, but I also like returning to my old favorites now and then.
- Companionship. Being around people has become an essential part of my life. I can't imagine spending all my time alone as I used to. I look forward to meeting new people, hearing new things, and spending time with the people whose company I enjoy.
- Family. I don't know what they'd do without me. I don't know what I'd do without them.
- Exercise. Exercise makes me feel good. Walking is my favorite and I walk all over....

I'd swear I made this list before, but I can't find it.
- They have interesting back-stories.
- They have suffered deeply in a way that still affects them.
- They have pasts that are as important as their presents.
- They are complicated; they have dimensions and complex reactions.
- They could have the motto: "What you see is not necessarily what you get."
- They feel strongly about certain things, both positive and negative.
- They need and want things so badly that they strive to get them.
- They don't have their present life under control.
- They have as many flaws as they have strengths.
- They struggle to survive or thrive without burying themselves in angst.

I discover new songs every once in a while.

A list of miscellaneous things I remember.
- I've won one official contest or competition in my entire life. I won two pairs of in-line skates when I was about seven. To enter, I colored a line art picture with colored pencils. Then I left it on the table and accidentally spilled water on it. When it had dried, it looked like watercolor painting. I sent it in and forgot about it. I won. It was strange.
- My third grade teacher had to stop giving spelling bees. One of two students always won and she decided that it wasn't fair for the other students. Those were the last spelling bees in which I participated. I was one of the two, which is odd because I'm not particularly talented in spelling anymore.

Bold line is the lyrics misheard. The next line is real lyrics. Indented line is credit to artist and song title.
- "Wrapped up like a douche / a roller in the night"
- "Revved up like a deuce / another runner in the night"
- "I need a Kleenex"
- "My little phoenix"
- "Burning down the shoes at ever dome"
- "Burning out his fuse up here alone"
- "If I could just teach my dog how to feel"
- "If they could just teach my dark heart to feel"

I find many good words, but I forget them before I have a chance to use them. Here I'm tracking words I'd like to use. (In alphabetical order.)
- aposiopesis : sudden breaking off in the midst of a sentence

- lucubration : laborious work, study, thought, etc., especially at night
- perfidious : deliberately faithless; treacherous; deceitful
- sacchariferous : containing or yielding sugar

I have been able to change my language before; I hope that I can continue changing it now.
- "Oh my God" (Eliminated except under shocking circumstances, at which point I might say it. I have replaced it with "Oh my goodness" or "Oh my.")
- "Oh my goodness" (I say this often, but I would like to replace it with something else. Maybe just "Oh my". I'll choose something.)
- "Like" (I would like to eliminate extraneous likes. When it means something in the sentence, that's all right. Other times, I want to remove it altogether.)
- "Uh" or "um" (This is more of a problem in public speaking than in conversation, but I would like to stop saying them as much as possible.)
- "Interesting" (I use this adjective to mean many different things. I want to repla...

- A summer thunderstorm that began with a black wall of clouds creeping across the sky like a blanket lit by lightning. People in other cars were watching it, too.
- Watching flickers of lightning and approaching dark clouds while walking home with my mother, and then running when the heavy rain fell and thunder got too loud.
- Going for a walk with a beach umbrella when the rain had been falling for days. The road was flooded over the curb, so I found and unclogged a drain with my foot and watched two whirlpools form with a loud sucking sound as the water drained.
- The thunderstorm that caused several tornado warnings and knocked out power for three or four days. There was a power line down across our driveway.
- Being driven home in a snowstorm so bad that the freeway was closed while being guided through back roads by my mother, who was at home with a map. The drive normally took an hour, but driving blind, it took more than two.

For the interesting quotes I find on the Web.
- "If you think one person is too small to make a difference, you've obviously never tried falling asleep with a mosquito in the room."
- "You know what never ceases to annoy me? When people are asked the age old question of, if they were stranded on a desert island and could only have one item, what that item would be. NEVER does one single moron in this society say they would have a boat to get off the damn island." source
- "God grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to know it's me." found

Some of the original Japanese YGO cards have names that are English loan words approximated in katakana. For some of these cards, the English translators chose Japanese words, often with roughly the same meaning. The Japanese cards have English names, and the English cards have Japanese names. It's odd. Here are some recently encountered examples.
- English card name (Type)
- Meaning of Japanese word(s)
- Japanese card name in Roman letters | translation
- Raigeki (Spell)
- being struck by lightning
- Sandā Boruto | Thunder Bolt
- Jigen Bakudan (Effect monster)

- I judge people (that I meet more than once) by personality and actions instead of by appearance.
- I don't care much what my romantic partners look like.
- I learn best by watching a demonstration and then trying it on my own.
- I am oblivious to dust and dirt; I usually need something pointed out to me before I'll clean it.
- When I'm paying attention to something, I'm very observant.
- I'm really good at word searches; the words just jump out at me.
- I need to look at my feet to see if they're doing the right thing when I first learn something.

- Slow-mo shuffle : One foot slides an inch, now the other foot, now the first foot, as if the skater is in slow motion; neither foot ever leaves the floor.
