- when feeling spiritless, I used to dress up in a pirate like getup, walk around the town, halt random shoppers on the street and yelp ''stand and deliver, your money or your life!'' in a desperate attempt to cure my boredom. more than often, my targets would walk away bewildered but I sometimes received a few guilders (later euros) and sweeties for my laughable efforts.
- hiding in the laundry basket and being carried up and down the staircase by my mother, who pretended to be ignorant of my whereabouts for the fun of it all.
- regular outings to the garden centre, more for their fantastic scones rather than to look at all the pretty flowers and botanic vines.
- going to my auntie's farm in Germany and picking gooseberries and raspberries, which we later made into jams and fruit spreads.
- reading book after book on summer afternoons with my mother whilst slurping ice lollies.
- plummeting into a canal after drinking a carton of apple juice and pretending to be drunk. fortunately for me, there were no houseboats on that particular lane of water so the chances of me being in among human waste are low... sort of. ugh. but I had a long shower afterwards.
- spending Sunday afternoons at my grandmother's house; making homemade meringues and eating them with tinned clementines.
