- The way a big, steaming mug of cider fogs up my glasses when I take a drink.
- The tangy, salty smell of burning driftwood during beachside bonfires.
- Fall fashion- chunky scarves, cropped jackets and boots.
- Frost on the window panes makes my tiny apartment feel cozy and warm.
- Hunting for the perfect colorful leaf
- When I was a little girl, my Grandpa would pay me a nickle for each brightly colored leaf I brought him when I came to visit. It quickly escalated into a challenge- each leaf had to be bigger, better, prettier than the last one.
- My Grandpa died 7 years ago. Every autumn I take a bundle of colorful leaves to his gravesite.
- The stark, majestic look of bare tree branches silhouetted against the sky.
- Leelanau Cellars Spiced Wine "Witches Brew"
- Eating butternut squash with molasses and brown sugar.
- Pumpkins of all shapes, sizes and colors adorning every available surface in my apartment.
- I love to decorate with pumpkins. I line them up on the mantle, I pile them in empty corners, I paint them with festive patterns...but I never carve them. They have so much personality. The idea of cutting them up makes me sad.
- Random roadtrips to the Amish country for folksy harvest festivals.
- Halloween- the one day of the year I don't get weird looks for dressing like a freak and gorging myself on candy.
- The rhythmic crunch crunch crunch of trapsing through a field of dead grass.
- Sipping an oatmeal latte at Descartes, watching the people bustle down Michigan Ave.
- Chicago is a beautiful city all year long, but there's something magical there in the fall.
- Munching on Cortland apples, fresh off the tree
- Fall colors that sound delicious- eggplant, wine, chestnut, burnt orange and sage.
- Cooler weather and longer nights are perfect excuses to snuggle!
- Dia de Los Muertos- the cheerfully macabre sugar skulls grinning at me from bodega windows on Central Ave.
