- Extremely low frequency (ELF) - generated by lightning and natural disturbances in Earth's magnetic field, communication with submarines.
- Super low frequency (SLF) - very few artificial communication systems; communication with submarines.
- Ultra low frequency (ULF) - can be observed in the magnetosphere and on the ground, communications in mines.
- Very low frequency (VLF) - radio navigation services, government time radio stations (broadcasting time signals to set radio clocks) and for secure military communication.
- Low frequency (LF) - long-distance communications, aircraft beacon, navigation (LORAN), information, and weather systems, time signal broadcasts.
- Medium frequency (MF) - AM radio broadcasting, navigational radio beacons, maritime ship-to-shore communication, and transoceanic air traffic control.
- High frequency (HF) - international shortwave broadcasting stations (3.95–25.82 MHz), aviation communication, government time stations, weather stations, amateur radio and citizens band services.
- Very high frequency (VHF) - Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) and FM radio broadcasting, television broadcasting, two-way land mobile radio systems (emergency, business, private use and military), long range data communication up to several tens of kilometers with radio modems, amateur radio, and marine communications.
- Ultra high frequency (UHF) - television broadcasting, cell phones, satellite communication including GPS, personal radio services including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, walkie-talkies, cordless phones, satellite phones, and numerous other applications.
- Super high frequency (SHF) - most radar transmitters, wireless LANs, satellite communication, microwave radio relay links, satellite phones (S band), and numerous short range terrestrial data links.; they are also used for heating in industrial microwave heating, medical diathermy, microwave hyperthermy to treat cancer, and to cook food in microwave ovens.
- Extremely high frequency (EHF) - military fire-control radar, airport security scanners, short range wireless networks, and scientific research; certain frequency ranges near the bottom of the band are being used in the newest generation of cell phone networks, 5G networks.
