teaching kids
- they are sponges.
- do not expect them to learn things in English which they haven't mastered in L1.
- all situations are learning situations, not only English vocabulary/structure.
- listening - speaking - reading - writing
- so, speak the word, they repeat, then show the written word.
- directions should be short and simple. do not change the instructions. (e.g. open your books; would you open your books?).
- use visual aids.
- speak less and English only (it's possible!).
- demonstrate rather then explain.
- distinguish: produce to understand. some structures then only have to understand and others they should be able to produce.
- repetition and recycling: through songs, drills, games, stories, exercises, homework (for the older young learners).
- support and encouragement for those who have never studied english and challenge for those who have studied english before.
- perfil acadêmico for each students on SGC.
- check homework after some fun activity.
- playing a game is not a waste of time.
- stand up if is true for you.
- duration of activities in class: students of 8-10 tend to focus on a activity for 10-15 minutes.
- in face2face lessons: Ss can go to the board.
- use kahoot only with students that have a mobile phone.
- with young learners you can create four cards just like kahoot and place them on the floor. you can also create cards with letters a,b,c,d for them to raise when they choose an answer.
- bamboozle (google): they can relax and have a break after a difficult activity, for example.
- when you're logged in, you can create teams with the ss' names.
- vary the activities: an exercise on the sb, a game, an activity on the sm, a different game.
- vary patterns of interaction: on their own, in pairs, as a class, as teams.
- praise and do positive correction!
