during all 5 years of study, copying from photographs is strictly forbidden. this is because copying develops a different set of skills for those required for constructive drawing, and suppresses one's ability to learn good skills of drawing from life, memory, and imagination.

by the end of such a school, a studentess would have stronger art skills than the majority of graduates of contemporary art academies of europe and america. and be considered as a professional fine artist by western standards.

however, this level is not good enough to entre some of the best art academies in moscow and st petersburg, that is why such a graduate would take additional 2-3 year art courses to get prepared for entry exams. the description below is an approximation of an art academy's curriculums because every institution has its specifics and specialisations. it tells only about drawing, although art students have many other subjects.

every next step requires proper knowledge and skills that must be gained at the previous levels. for example. to depict emotions in portrait, an artist has to have solid understanding of human head anatomy, its instruction and proportions, as well as the ability to draw lines as intended by the artists mind. not to mention the developed feeling of perspective both linear and aerial.

solving artistic tasks like telling the story, and expressing the artists POV requires a great set of skills, that have to be learned and practised for many years. this set of skills is what other people call "talent" but those who know how hard they had to work to get these skills fully comprehend that 98% of their success is due to good art education, hard work, and practice. not some "inborn talent" that makes their art wonderful.

Example of a class on Colour & Light

THE CLASS

  • Color, light, atmosphere, and mood- these are all elements that elevate a moment in a visual narrative from "just ok" to completely unforgettable and bursting with emotion. In this 7-week course, students will first learn the fundamentals of color and lighting, and then learn how to break those rules to make gorgeously stylized environment illustrations for feature film development and TV background painting.

  • I’m currently a visual development artist on Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse.
  • I've worked as a BG painter, vis dev artist and color designer on various TV and film projects at Dreamworks TV, Cartoon Network, Skydance, and Netflix, including Kipo & the Age of Wonderbeasts and Steven Universe Future.

CURRICULUM

WEEK 1: VALUE

  • The fundamentals of value, contrast, and value grouping. We’ll learn about how value forms the foundation of color.

WEEK 2: HUE & SATURATION

  • The fundamentals of hue and saturation, and how those components interact with value to create appealing color palettes.

WEEK 3: LIGHT & ATMOSPHERE

  • A deep dive into the ways that light changes our perception of color, and how to compose images with a full understanding of lighting and atmosphere. We’ll learn about different times of day and different lighting conditions, and how to achieve them in our paintings.

WEEK 4: COMPOSITION

  • This week, we’ll discover the role that color plays in directing the eye and conveying a narrative within a single image. You’ll leave with the tools of how to construct a solid composition using color, and how changing your hue and value structure can fundamentally alter the message of your painting.

WEEK 5: STYLIZED COLOR

  • With a full understanding of the rules of observed color and light, this week we will proceed to break all of them. We will learn how to create stunning stylized color palettes and how to see colors where they don’t exist.

WEEK 6: NARRATIVE THROUGH COLOR & LIGHT

  • The finale of the course will elevate everything we have learned into a grand conclusion: how to evoke emotion in a series of images from exploring different moods and lighting. We’ll study color keys and learn about the process of arriving at a color narrative when working on an animated film.

WEEK 7: INDUSTRY CRASH COURSE

  • A crash course of information in the day-to-day of different industry jobs that focus heavily on color and light such as color design, TV background painting, and feature visdev. You’ll learn about daily routines, the work expected of these jobs, average salaries and my own personal experiences of working in the animation industry

  • Review Tier students will sign up for all-day review slots where I will do a personalized review of their work, including critique and paint-overs of their assignments. These reviews will be open for other students to watch if they wish.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Students must have prior familiarity with a digital drawing program. Photoshop is recommended as I will be teaching my personal workflow with that program, but students are welcome to use any program of their choice to complete their assignments.
  • Some basic drawing knowledge will be required. Since this is a color focused class, we will not be learning the fundamentals of drawing and design. If you are already comfortable enough to draw from a photo you should be fine in this course.

Example of an artist workshop course

Week 1

  • Lecture: Gesture drawing and the element of process
  • Homework: 100 gesture drawings (half should be from life, the other half from Old Masters drawings, paintings or sculptures). Choose 5 of your best gestures to submit for critique and instructor feedback.

Week 2

  • Lecture: Connections, shape, and understanding the skeletal landmarks. Differences in gender, range, and mechanics of movement, and design of the bones.
  • Homework: 25 construction drawings. Choose 2 for critique.

Week 3

  • Lecture: Head drawing, skeletal construction, design, and anatomy of the human head.
  • Homework: 25 head constructions. Choose 2 for critique.

Week 4 and 5

  • Lecture: Muscles: Torso/Trunk. Placing the anatomical shapes of the upper and lower torso based off of the understanding of the skeletal landmarks.
  • Homework: 25 construction drawings per week. Choose 2 for critique per week.

Week 6

  • Lecture: Structure and Anatomy of the Leg and Foot
  • Homework: 25 leg and pelvis constructions. Choose 2 for critique.

Week 7

  • Lecture: Structure, design, and anatomy of the upper arm and shoulder
  • Homework: 25 shoulder and arm constructions. Develop the anatomy of the upper arms together with the anatomy of the upper torso. Choose 2 for critique.

Week 8

  • Lecture: The structure, construction, and design of the forearm and hand
