— ♡ Notes where I explain the same thing 3 times until I find a simpler way to describe it ♡ —

  • When making a comic or zine that is "saddle-stitched" (stapled on the spine and then folded), your book must have a total number of pages that can be divided by 4, because that's how many pages a folded piece of paper makes.
    • 4 × 2 (master sheets of A4) = 8 (A5 pages)
    • 4 × 3 (master sheets) = 12 (pages)
    • 4 × 4 (master sheets) = 16 (pages)
    • etc
  • The page count will include the front and back cover, as well as the inside front and back covers (which are sometimes blank).
  • An example of a master sheet is 1×A4 paper which would then be folded in half to create 2 sheets of A5.
  • 2 master sheets (aka 2 sheets of A4 paper) would create
    • 4 sheets of A5 paper
    • 8 pages (if you numbered the back and front of every page including the front cover and back cover)
  • However if you wanted to leave the insides of the front and back covers blank, you would only have the inner pages to work with. This would look like this
    • 8 pages = Front cover (page 1), blank inner page (page 2), first page (page 3), second page (page 4), third page (page 5), fourth page (page 6), blank inner page (page 7), back cover (page 8)
    • 4 × 2 (master sheets) = 8 (pages)
      • account for 1 master sheet for the front and back cover and blank inner covers = 1 master sheet (4 pages) left for use
    • 4 × 3 (master sheets) = 12 (pages)
      • account for 1 master sheet for the front and back cover and blank inner covers = 2 master sheets (8 pages) left for use
    • 4 × 4 (master sheets) = 16 (pages)
      • account for 1 master sheet for the front and back cover and blank inner covers = 3 master sheets (12 pages) left for use
