- to live somewhere mostly quiet, pretty, and inspiring.
- to settle somewhere, because it is not practical to want to leave all the time. it's more important for me to feel like i have a home, to have a place for my stuff, and to look after my cats.
- but also to see a lot more of the world before i die, because that does seem to be something that makes me very happy when i get to do it.
- to have a lifelong, stable, committed partnership that feels mutually encouraging, fun, and creatively and intellectually stimulating.
- to have an aesthetically pleasing daily routine.
- to feel like i have a good toolbox for making sense of the world and communicating my thoughts, good skills of selection, evaluation, interpretation, writing, speaking, presentation.
- to also develop the necessary skills of self-discipline, planning, and prolonged concentration.
- to, in one way or another, dedicate my life to archival materials and to enhancing public understanding and engagement with them.
- to stay in love with movies forever, to grow joyfully obsessed, and knowledgeable, and critical, and finally to have movies be an integral part of what i do day in day out.
- to always be writing, to take writing seriously, and to take pleasure in writing.
- to find some kind of audience for my writing.
- to have lots of free time.
- to shun overachievement as a matter of principle and live a pleasurable, interesting, fun, but simple life with low-key contemplation at its centre, like watching a tv documentary in the middle of the afternoon.
- to accumulate, preserve, arrange and present things that i cherish, documents of my trajectory, of what is or has been important to me. to be surrounded by objects that ground and validate my sense of self
- to be considered vaguely well-read
- to find the others
- to have enough money to: live in nice surroundings, in a place with a good kitchen and a sunny outdoor area, the occasional impulse-buy on ebay, own comic books and records and movies on various formats, go to center parcs, have and raise children (if i decide i really want to)
- to one day look around and think 'life has turned out pretty good!'
- to speak a moderately impressive number of languages.
- to successfully express myself in a creative medium. by creative i mean: open-ended, involving a degree of technical skill, involving aesthetic concerns, existing in the real world, being comprehensible to others.
