• MICAH - pork & beans succulent - june 2009. i was at a staff retreat with co-workers up in the oakland hills with no reception. this was the first plant i ever potted with soil and my hands. when we all were ready to go home, we found out that both michael jackson and farrah fawcett had passed away. i combined their first names and named my plant after them to commemorate the day. associations i have for this plant: death/rebirth, co-worker commraderie. sadly micah met his/her death when my british friends visited in fall 2011, and the pot plunged to an untimely end.
  • DALEA - orchid - aug 2009. this was a gift from my parents for my 25th birthday. all i wanted was a trip to ikea, and so we went and picked this one here. the flowers have since been long gone but the leaves are still lush. the name is a hybrid and comes from: "da" (my dad's name), "le" (my mom's name), "a" (my brother's name). associations: family, fauna.
  • ALEX - cactus succulent - aug 2009. this was a going-away gift from my co-worker when i quit my full-time job to go back to school. since i wanted a name with significance, i decided to name this one alex after alexander hamilton, the latter name being the name of my work site. also, i am obsessed with pre-civil war history, and he is one of my favorites. associations: fresh starts, eric. this also met its demise via the hands of the brits.
  • CORA - red leaf - feb 2010. morgan and i were at a 826 event and we popped into paxton gate on a whim afterwars where i fell in love with this plant. i wanted a name to reflect the redness of it, so cora is derived from "coral." we dropped it off at my house and went into north beach that night for drinks with amazing people. i have "killed" cora twice so far, once when i was away for sxsw, and the other time during when i was dealing with a very personal reason and was not home a lot. associations: zach. this also met its demise via the hands of the brits.
  • CINDERELLA - mar/apr 2010 - i bought this one from my school's arboreteum around spring break time. it's also known as a lady slipper plant, as the little flowers are tuffs with air pockets in them. i sadly could not keep it alive in my place due to the finnicky conditions of the weather and temperature. associations: barback. this also met its demise via the hands of the brits.
  • BETTY - apr 2010 - i remember being very happy at this point in life. i decided to stroll around the farmer's market in civic center on my work lunch while eating a push-pop ice cream. i found this plant sitting on the floor with others for only a $1. and because betty white is seriously one of the funniest bitches ever, it seemed only appropriate to name the one after her. associations: stability, sunny days. this also met its demise via the hands of the brits.
  • J'TAIME - orange leaf - july 2010. i bought this plant the day after one of the most unforgettable days of my life to remind me that life itself can be regenerated. i think plants are a beautiful example of what can happen when a little work, nurturing, and love is paid attention to. things can grown when you're invested. this one is named so because it is a derivative of james and means "i love you" in french; this is important since that name is coincidentally the middle name of two of the most important men to ever come into my life romantically, and who are crossing paths in different parts of my life right now. associations: see above...this also met its demise via the hands of the brits.
