When I was growing up, the friends I hung out with were trash talkers. The books I read was trash fiction.

I was stupid and followed what each of them said blindly. So I got all my life lessons from doing stupid stuff, and falling flat on my face.

My friends and I made plans like robbing a video store (genius, right?) to make more money. We even organized a reunion of old class fellows to get the hot chicks in our college to like us (they obviously didn’t).

Our other ‘genius’ plans were equally hare-brained. Thankfully we never got in serious trouble, since most of our plans died before the end of the night.

I can tell you though that in my short time on this blue dot, I’ve picked up a few things. These are what I’ll share with you today. It won’t be the ‘end-all’ for things you should know about lif...

Project Part III: Design Document

Now that you know the essential concepts about gamification and game design, it's time to use them. For this final task, we ask you to bridge this gap as you meld creativity and structure to match peoples' needs with technical feasibility and business realities.

You are approached by Cheyenne Kendrick, the CEO of Go Digital Press (GDP), a global publisher of electronic books for devices such as the Kindle, Nook, and iPad. She knows you are one of the top experts on gamification, which she has heard can revolutionize publishing. She asks you to present a proposal for a gamified system to take her business to the next level.

GDP concentrates on the trade segment of the book market, i.e. non-fiction publications that would traditionally appear in bookstores, rather than mass-market paper...

Peter Coughter, Art of the Pitch

How to be a better communicator, be a better presenter.

People pitching the ideas kill the ideas.

  • Al Ries, one of the creators of the term positioning and co-author of the book, Positioning: the Battle for Your Mind, likes to say it’s the single word that comes to mind when the brand is mentioned. For Volvo it’s “safety”. For Whole Foods it’s “organic”. For Sierra Club it’s “environment”. These words come from the essence of the brand. It begins with the corporate mission and the vision for the product. It incorporates corporate values and culture. It’s the brand story, the brand platform, the brand presence. It’s the people associated with the brand at all levels of the supply chain. It’s the leadership of the company and of the brand champions within and outside the company. And it’s the word-of-mouth and status the brand enjoys.

Experts—journalists, analysts, consultants, bankers and gurus—can’t “do” so they “advise.” They can tell you what is wrong with your product, but they cannot make a great one. They can tell you how to sell something, but they cannot sell it themselves. They can tell you how to create great teams, but they only manage a secretary. --- The Dalai Lama said sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck. I agree. We often have no idea what we really want. We know what looks good on paper. We know what we should want, according to society. But often when you’re jealous of someone else, it has nothing to do with what they have. It’s about how you assume having that would make you feel.

I consider myself fortunate for having learned this early, but for me, the biggest lesson is that 30 is NOT the new 20. Our 20s matter, and the decisions we make in our 20s can profoundly influence our futures.

"Oh, you have plenty of time to figure it out. Don't worry about anything," people say. On one hand it's true that most of us have time to kick back and relax a little more than we do. But on the other hand, life is definitely short. That means there isn't a lot of time to waste on dead-end decisions, at least not if you value having a life that feels at least somewhat focused and controlled. Not everyone agrees with that, but I believe this strongly. There is no greater sense of loss in your 20s than feeling like you don't have a plan and aren't on your way to somewhere you want to be. With that in mind, I try to stick to the following principles:...

I have a surprise!” and come back with a bucket of ice and dump it in the tub and shout “I’m Rose and you’re Jack! Isn’t that water COLD?!” And when you try to jump out, they hold you down under the icy water, and sob softly and the last words you hear as your final breath leaves your body and everything goes dark is their voice whispering over and over, “I’ll never let go.” -- LOL

Between 16 and about 30, life gives us incredible energy. After that, we have less energy and less time. As Franklin said, "Do ye love life? Then do not waste time, for that is the stuff life is made of." You see, one of the great lessons of Western Civ is to delay gratification in hopes of a better reward down the road. Hence, the many compelling time-wasters of our day (mindless internet surfing, video games, texting, reality TV, endless social media use, porn, bad relationships etc.,) --these are all a slow drip of poison for the life you hope to have. You can never get back those many hours wasted.

What should one do instead? Read, study ...

    • But it was only the beginning of the rise to power of psychoanalysis in America. Psychoanalysts were about to move into big business and use their techniques not just to create model citizens but model consumers. Last week's episode showed how Freud's American nephew Edward Bernays had been the first to convince American corporations that they could sell products by connecting them with people's unconscious feelings. But now a group of psychoanalysts were going to take what Bernays had begun and invent a whole range of techniques to get inside and manage the unconscious mind of the consumer. They were led by Ernest Dichter. Dichter had practiced next door to Freud in Vienna, but he had co...

  • In 1997, advertising guru Jon Steel, author of Perfect Pitch: The Art of Selling Ideas and Winning New Business, met Steve Jobs. In roughly six minutes, the Apple Computer CEO gave the most "focused, passionate, and inspiring" presentation Steel had ever seen in more than 20 years in the advertising business.

Steel discusses the event in the introduction to his book. Here's the background. Jobs had just been brought back to Apple to rescue the company from the brink of extinction. One of the things he wanted to change was Apple's advertising and so Jobs asked two firms whose work he liked to come in and speak directly with him. One of these firms was Steel's agency.

When Steel and his two partners arrived at Apple, they were met by two senior members of Apple's marketing department-employees Jobs had inherited from the former C...

  • The Fresnel Effect
  • The Fresnel effect is named for the nineteenth-century French physicist Jean Augustin Fresnel (pronounced with a silent s). This effect describes the amount of reflection and refraction that occurs on a surface as the viewing angle changes.
  • The glancing angle is the angle at which you view a surface.
  • If you are standing in front of a wall, the wall is perpendicular, and thus the glancing angle is 0.
  • If you are looking across the ocean, the glancing angle of the surface of the water is very high. The Fresnel effect states that as the glancing angle increases, the surface becomes more reflective than refractive. It’s easy to see objects in water as you stare straight down into water (low glancing angle); however, as you stare across the surface of water, the reflectivity increa... .

When subjects viewed the pictures of the original sculptures, scans of their brains showed a strong emotional response; they were clearly moved. There was much less response to the sculptures with subtle change in proportion.

“We were very surprised that very small modifications to images of the sculptures led to very strong modifications in brain activity,” researcher Giacomo Rizzolatti tells Livescience.com. He believes that the human brain may have a special attraction to images that demonstrate the “golden ratio,” an eye-pleasing proportion of 1-to-0.618 that shows up again and again in art and nature. This ratio can be found in a nautilus shell and spiral ...

  • "No matter how familiar we are with our craft, it is more than safe to say we will never know if we know it enough, enough to say that we are well adjusted to its demands, our expectations from our crafts and our craft's expectations from us. I see it as a map: an object of only names and labels and other labels which necessarily show which are good and bad for us. So in trying to discourse different corners of our crafts, exploration is taken more seriously by trying to figure out where we're supposed to go. It is more important for us to know where to stop, to know that we have reached our spot."

  • use Nook Kitkat for educational purposes for kids

Questions:

  • Can I still have access to New Yorker issues on Kitkat via Nook app? If Yes > Go root Nook Tablet to Kitkat -- YES, accdg to B&N CSR --> BUUUT
  • If google detects this is a BN Nook Tablet, Nook App will not be downloadable. I guess APK?
  • Is Nook App compatible with a rooted Kitkat Android? Hopefully.

Imagine walking down a long empty dirt road toward a large shade tree in the distance... as you get close, you notice someone sitting under the tree; you think it might be nice to sit and chat for a bit. as you get very close you recognize it is you under the tree at half your age.

what do you talk about?

  • . . (I leave it here and let the person talk about anything they like for as long as they like) . . .

inevitably, the younger talks about plans and dreams for the future, and the fear of faliure... the older speaks about lost opportunities, regrets, and the triumphs of taking risks...

    • Later, we read the current state of the button, and if it’s pressed (val == HIGH), we change state from 0 to 1, or vice versa. We do this using a small trick, as state can be only either 1 or 0. The trick I use involves a small mathematical expression based on the idea that 1 – 0 is 1 and 1 – 1 is 0: state = 1 – state; The line may not make much sense in mathematics, but it does in programming. The symbol = means “assign the result of what’s after me to the variable name before me" --in this case, the new value of state is assigned the value of 1 minus the old value of state.

  • I just set up a good solution for this, it requires dropbox. I am currently using this to sync plugins and settings across ~5 different sublime installs on windows, linux, osx, and a few vm's.
  • Step 1: use PackageControl to manage all your plugins, its awesome.
  • Step 2: Add a "Sublime" directory to your root drop-box directory (I replicated the full directory structure for the hell of it, {DropBox}/Sublime/Packages/User). Make sure sublime is closed, and move the contents of {SublimeRoot}/Packages/User in to the dropbox directory you just made. Delete {SublimeRoot}/Packages/User, and replace it with a symlink that points to {DropBox}/Sublime/Packages/User.
  • Use this same process on every computer where you use sublime, it accomplishes 2 things.

Professor Werbach’s six-step gamification design framework is described in lecture unit 7. To help with your final written assignment, below is a summary of each element.

Your submission should be organized around these six tasks. However, this is not a precise template. You could start with an overview of your system, for example. And you don’t need to address every specific question below; they are just offered to illustrate the design steps.

Define business objectives. Why are you gamifying? How do you hope to benefit your business, or achieve some other goal such as motivating people to change their behavior? The first written assignment focused on this step of the process, so you may wish to look back on your earlier submission and the peer assessments for guidance. As you state your objectives, emphasize the end goal or goals of your gamifie...

Your Keirsey Temperament Sorter Results indicates that your personality type is that of the

Rationals are the problem solving temperament, particularly if the problem has to do with the many complex systems that make up the world around us. Rationals might tackle problems in organic systems such as plants and animals, or in mechanical systems such as railroads and computers, or in social systems such as families and companies and governments. But whatever systems fire their curiosity, Rationals will analyze them to understand how they work, so they can figure out how to make them work better.

All Rationals share the following core characteristics:

Don’t let your concept get in the way of the product.

Bernbach said,“Our job is to sell our clients’ merchandise ...not ourselves. To killthe cleverness that makes us shine instead of the product.”This canhappen, and when clients kill an ad for this reason they may be right. From more than one client,I’ve heard this dreaded phrase:“Yourconcept is a ‘Visual Vampire.’”What they mean is the concept’sexecution is so busy it sucks the life out of their commercial mes-sage.Be ready for this one.Sometimes clients use the phrase as abludgeon to kill something unusual they don’t like. But sometimes,a few of them are right.*This usually happens when the product bores you.Which meansyou haven’t dug deep enough to find the thing about it that’s excitingor interesting. You settle for doing some sort of conceptual gy...

BittBox's Jay Hilgert shares his professional advice on keeping track of your digital assets.

  • Sort via filenames If you insist on keeping everything in a single folder, a quick way to get organised is to add a prefix to the filenames. You can use something like vector_, img_, icon_ and so on. Sorting by file type alone won't always work since many downloads are folders, not files.
  • Take note of Flickr licences If you're like me, you download from Flickr on a regular basis. I like to save my Flickr images in folders named after the different Creative Commons licences. This way I automatically know how each image can be used.
  • Save EPS thumbnails When you are looking at an EPS file you downloaded, re-save over the original and make sure 'Include Document Thumbnails' is checked. This means you get a thumbnail while browsing your file system instead...

      • A tourist from America paid a visit to a renowned Polish rabbi, Hofetz Chaim.

He was astonished to see the rabbi’s home was only a simple room filled with books, plus a table and bench. “Rabbi,” asked the tourist, “where is your furniture?” “Where is yours?” replied Hofetz Chaim. “Mine?” asked the puzzled American. “But I’m only passing through.” “So am I,” said the rabbi.

  • WS: Do you have any tips or advice on how to get better, or how to get into the industry?

AA: I think the best advice I could give is that you really have to edit the work. It’s much better to have four to five brilliant ideas than eight mediocre ones, or three that drag the rest down. And the only way you can edit it is by showing it to people. I made a list. Make the B list and A list and show it to everyone on the B list, be ruthless about the crits, and get it down to your best work. Show it again, be ruthless, and then start showing it to the A list. And keep editing through your whole career.

By writing simply and writing what it is, the audience is drawn into the poet's world. Their imagination is stimulated, and a silent connection is established. I believe this is where the most important aspect of Japanese sense of beauty lies.

TRUE GRIT = sustained passion + perseverance

  • "putting the hardest kind of work in"
  • put in hours of deliberate practice

Studying Cox's findings, Duckworth isolated two qualities that she thought might be a better predictor of outstanding achievement:

  • The tendency not to abandon tasks from mere changeability. Not seeking something because of novelty. Not "looking for a change."
  • The tendency not to abandon tasks in the face of obstacles. Perseverance, tenacity, doggedness.

Foer identified four principles that he saw the experts using to remain alert and to keep learning:

  • Experts tend to operate outside their comfort zone and study themselves failing.
  • Experts will try to walk in the shoes of ...

  • “The need for temporary solitude is so intense it amounts to an impediment, a malady, chronic and incurable like recurring malaria…. Like a remittent fever it is nothing you can banish. Outwardly we look okay, but inwardly we are desperate; gasping and frantic for something as integral to ourselves as the colour of our eyes.”

Mirabel Osler

  • “You do not need to leave your room… Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait. Do not even wait, be quite still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked. It has no choice. It will roll in ecstasy at your feet.”
