- advice on starting a wardrobe from OYMG
- decide on the colour palette you want first
- start with these basics
- 3 dresses (skip if going for boyish look)
- 2 skirts (or pants/shorts)
- 3 blouses
- 2 t-shirts or tops (more if not getting any dresses)
- at least 2 cardigans or other outerwear
- 2 pairs of shoes
- 1 bag
- assortment of socks and legwear
- assortment of accessories
- ✽ choose things that can be layered, mixed and matched and used in multiple ways.
- Kathryn's (IDKBIL) Beginners' Guide
- Choose a general colour scheme to co-ord with.
- Determine what styles and lengths look good on you and you feel good in.
- Select a base dress in a neutral colour with just a few details.
- Select an plain underskirt. Make sure the colour and length go well with your base dress.
- Next is a lace underskirt. A sleveless dress will also do. Make sure the length works well with your base dress.
- Choose a patterned skirt to either wear as an overskirt, or under the base dress. Make sure the colours match your scheme and the length works well. A good option is a skirt with fake 'layers'.
- Tunic top: stick to a neutral colour with lace or other details. Or choose patterns if you are getting several.
- Tights and/or socks: as with the tunic, stick to a neutral colour with light detail. Or choose colours/patterns if you are getting several. Co-ord with legwarmers as well.
- 'Fun' dress. A dress with more colour, detail or pattern. Choose one that co-ords with the rest of your wardrobe. This will be more effort, but worth it.
- A blouse is a good layering piece. Long or short sleeve is fine. It will most likely be covered up, so an interesting collar is the most important thing. If you choose a blouse/tunic top with details, make sure you can fit it into co-ord where the details will be seen.
- A jumper is optional depending on your climate. Make sure it's loose enough to go over your other layers.
- A knitted/crocheted vest (or lace in warmer climates). Choose a length that fits with the rest of your wardrobe.
- Shawls and/or capelets add extra layers to your co-ord. A light scarf can be worn in warm weather.
- Pants (optional). Make sure they are a loose fit. Khaki and green are good options instead of blue-jeans.
- A wide range of shoes are suitable: boots, oxfords, tennis shoes, ballet flats. Look for ones with details that match your co-ord.
- Accessories: brooch. Look for brooches with a thin pin that will minimise damage to fabric. Or try making your own.
- Scarves are preferably long so you can wind them around your neck. Choose the material according to the temperature. Lace, colours and patterns are all good options.
- Necklaces with woodland themes are perfect. Gold or tarnished silver is good. Choose materials like leather, lace and twine for a natural look.
- Any kind of bag is fine, as long as it matches your co-ord.
- Other optional items: hair clip; headband; a hat.
