• on july 18, 1830, st catherine labouré of the sisters of charity of st vincent de paul was visited by the Blessed Mother
• sister justine bisqueyburu was visited by Mary 5 times beginning on january 28, 1840
• after justine received the habit of the daughters of charity she was again visited by Mary, who presented the chosen nun with the scapular
• it was twice approved by pope pius (in 1863 and 1870)
