requirements:
- public transit
- AZA-/EAZA-/WAZA-accredited zoo
- art gallery
- we will not be cold
- ideally this will be a food-based experience
possible destinations:
- montreal
- pros
- cons
- we have been there together before (but not since we were 13)
- no panda
- biodome is kind of a weak zoo offering (but it does have multiple animals i would like to see)
- previously in quebec i mixed up the words "jambe" and "jambon" when trying to order a pizza with ham and i am still haunted by it
- in general i am not great at french (see previous point)
- last time we were there we had some ghost activity and like, what if it's still there. what if it remembers us
- toronto
- pros
- undoubtedly the cheapest flight options
- great zoo
- i have friends to visit
- cons
- incredibly not-cheap lodgings
- we have been there before (though not together)
- i don't really have anything i want to do there
- the iconic shithole pizza place i loved has closed
- weakest possible turner and it's not on display
- having friends to visit means being obligated to visit friends
- vienna
- accredited zoo with pandas
- number one on my list of destinations, so much stuff i wanna do there!
- lots of art but no turners
- BUT this is a pricier destination and i will be going there at some point regardless, it would be amazing to split the cost of accommodations and then i can see a turner on my own sometime instead of dragging poor d around
- brugelette
- pairi daiza in brugelette has pandas!
- BUT most stuff we would want to do is in brussels or elsewhere
- boston
- pros
- MULTIPLE accredited zoos
- so many museums
- a turner on view in the museum of fine arts AND some great etruscan funerary sculpture i would love to see up close
- cons
- i would be absolutely insufferable trying to navigate by where things were located in fallout 4
- no pandas?
- washington/baltimore
- pros
- panda
- smithsonian
- national gallery admission is free (vs. $27 to the mfa in boston BUT i would get to see a turner there)
- cons
- as far as i can tell there are a lot of turners in various galleries but none on view, which is simply rude
- to write up later: cincinnati, san diego
- other considerations:
- since i started making this list ages ago, some pandas have left zoos i mentioned above (i think?).
- will any zoos in usa/canada even have pandas soon with all the tensions with china.
- did d ever renew her passport, and would she be willing to do a longer flight (like california) if the payoff is pandas. does she still even want to maybe go to the states given this current political context
- 2025 update: well now i certainly don't wanna go there lmfao
- what is even our budget (how was this the one thing we didn't discuss)
