I read one book and now I'm really emotional over these cephalopods

  • the plural is octopuses, not octopi, because the origin word is greek and the plural -i is latin and you just don't combine the two
  • sometimes they'll carry around halved coconut shells for protection
  • their brains have 50-75 lobes and 300-500 million neurons
  • 2/3 of those neurons are actually in their arms
  • they're technically colorblind but see with their skin via gene sequences on their skin that are normally contained in the eyes
  • then there's the Opisthoteuthis Adorabilis x
  • they're crazy smart, and scientists seem to be just discovering how smart they truly are
  • they love interior decorating and put shells and rocks and things around their dens
  • they enjoy puzzles
  • they play with toys like legos, cameras, rubber duckies, puzzle boxes, etc
  • sometimes they play with toys by gently shooting water from their funnels at the toys back and forth in their tank
  • their physical transformative abilities are incredible
  • they can regrow arms!
  • they've been known to recognize handlers and be able to distinguish one person from another
  • they have three hearts
  • they have unique personalities (lady octopuses tend to be more feisty, though)
  • honestly they're kinda like cats???? mischievous, affectionate, aloof, intelligent, and are 99% most likely aliens????
  • basically, i really love octopuses now
