- keep a list of transferrable skills and examples of how you gained and used them
- analyse job advertisements for the skills they are looking for, and build your application around them (no more 'one CV fits all', sadly)
- research the organisation: values, culture, activities, opportunities for progression, flexibility, community involvement
- don't list your duties and achievements, describe them
- use 'power' words
- use verbs at the start of your sentences
- write actively, not passively
- write concisely, in short paragraphs or bullet points
- create your personal brand/unique selling point
- use CV-scanning software to your advantage:
- use standard fonts
- no special characters
- standard bullet points
- clear headings
- full titles of qualifications
- dates at the end of qualifications and experience
- if you have a recent gap in your application, explain it while writing positively about it (i.e. explaining how you used the time)
- move emphasis away from the gap by being positive and enthusiastic elsewhere in your application
